Title: Steering column
Post by: Paul Proefrock on May 14, 2025, 06:03 PM
The year+ that I waited for my kit, I scoured the GT40 forum for ideas. One that made the 'must do' list was an adjustable steering column. Tom's Trackracer build outlined using a VW Fox column. They come primarily from England, they were pretty popular there. Found one on eBay, delivered for $60 US so I jumped on it.

It's taken some cut/fit to use it but I I'm gonna like this

More details to follow

ps:that's part of the collapsible shaft hanging down, looks like it will line up with the rack without modification

Did you add on to the tunnel?

Steve, not sure I understand your question. I did not make any changes to the tunnel. I modified the tray to raise the column slightly higher, allowing for and maintaining foot clearance for the pedals.

A bonus: I found the column fits the RCR chassis with the new RCR rack perfectly. I did have to modify the end VW universal joint to fit the D-shaft of the rack. I modified the center bearing of the shaft so it would bolt to the tray. I will weld the quick release spline to the end when I have the dash installed and can determine the minimum position for the steering wheel.

It adjusts up and down / in and out about 1-1/2" each direction
